Interim Human Rights Specialist, Tony’s Open Chain

  • Hybrid

Job description

Why we are here
Tony’s Open Chain (TOC) is an industry-led initiative dedicated to empowering chocolate brands to revolutionize their cocoa supply chains and lead the way in sustainability. By becoming Mission Allies of Tony's Open Chain, brands or retailers make a commitment to the 5 sourcing principles – traceability, higher prices, long-term commitments, strong farmer partnerships, and enhanced quality and productivity - with the ultimate goal to end exploitation in cocoa. To facilitate the participation of Mission Allies in Tony's Open Chain, we work with a growing set of chocolate processors to facilitate the sourcing of Tony’s Open Chain beans for the products of our Mission Allies. You can read more about Tony's Open Chain on our Impact Report

Among the Mission Allies who have already committed to sourcing cocoa through Tony's Open Chain are Tony’s Chocolonely, Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Hema, ALDI, Jokolade, Vly Foods, The Flower Farm, PLUS, KoRo Source, Feastables, Ben & Jerry's, Waitrose, Pip&Nut, Huel and Cococo. Together, we are forging a path towards a more sustainable and ethical cocoa industry. Join us in making a difference through Tony's Open Chain!

What you will do
We're on the lookout for an exceptional
interim Human Rights Specialist to join Tony’s Open Chain (TOC) team. You will be stepping in for an interim period of 9 months starting on September 1st, 2025 and be based together with our TOC team in Amsterdam.

As interim Human Rights Specialist your main goal is to ensure Tony’s Open Chain’s impact programs are recognized as world class by generating impact for farming households in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. You will ensure our 5 Sourcing Principles approach goes above and beyond industry norms by accelerating human rights protection for children, women, workers and communities. As a lead of a small expertise team (the Human Rights Triangle), it is your responsibility to implement impactful and innovative programmes and set a high bar for human rights standards in the communities where we source cocoa from, in line with TOC strategy and financial model.

As the interim Human Rights Specialist, you will join our 5 Sourcing Principles team and collaborate closely with other TOC Amsterdam colleagues, West African teams, partner co-ops as well as other industry experts. The 5SP team consists of four specialists, each an expert in their respective area and working closely with our teams and partner co-ops.

All wrapped up, you will be responsible for

  • Implementing the annual plan for the Human Rights Triangle of specialists and the broader country teams in West Africa by targeted programming with co-ops, bringing desired results in the human rights programs for farmers, families and communities in the TOC supply chain

  • Ensuring the 5 Sourcing Principles approach goes above and beyond industry regulations, standards and norms for illegal forms and conditions of labour present in the West African context

  • Using your knowledge and network to seek out and test innovations to maintain a best-in-class programme that supports the future of farming

  • Ensuring a successful rollout of our new data collection system together with our service provider

  • Ensuring the human rights programmes can scale efficiently and effectively across our partner co-ops

  • Aligning the targets and results of the programmes with the three core objectives: reaching a living income, irradicating illegal forms of labour, and preventing deforestation, and addressing the root cause of these challenges: poverty

  • Balancing the credibility and impact of TOC with a healthy and scalable cost-benefit ratio per co-op

  • Representing TOC at the industry-level in human rights related topics, building fruitful partnerships, learning from others and sharing best practices

  • Building relationships: Foster strong connections and create buy-in with both internal and external stakeholders, including Mission Allies and West African co-ops

  • Travelling to West Africa to connect with the TOC team at least once during the interim period

Job requirements

  • Field-level human rights program implementation experience in (West) Africa

  • Excellent project management, communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills

  • Data and numbers literacy: you are a data-driven decision maker and utilize data to identify process improvements and make objective, informed decisions

  • Ability to balance ideals and real-world constraints; you are a pragmatic idealist at heart

  • Strong business understanding and strategic mindset: Ability to see the big picture, but not afraid to roll up your sleeves to ensure brilliant execution

  • Fluency in both French and English

  • Master’s degree or equivalent level of experience in a relevant topic

  • Eagerness to work in a fast-paced scaleup environment and strong prioritization skills

  • We are all about being more in person than apart; this means we offer flexibility but see each other in the Amsterdam office on average 3 days a week. More is fine too!

  • Bonus points if you have previous experience in the world of cocoa!
